about

Ah the thrift store. Back in the day they seemed a lot less homogenous, and you could sometimes stumble across the odd thing of real value - a musical instrument maybe, a typewriter, or a really nice wool shirt.

Lots of old records, too. Mostly crappy rock and roll and Andy Williams and stuff like that, but also the occasional country or r&b gem (Hank Williams, Al Green, John Lee Hooker), as well as racks of the more esoteric polka, Hawaiian lap steel, experimental lounge, and soundtrack options. Most of the special stuff that can demand a higher price seems to get snatched up by various dealers and the internet these days, and never makes it to the shelves. So it goes. Better that way than the landfill, anyway.

But even if they aren't quite what they used to be, the thrift store is still a welcoming place for the practical clothes shopper. And, if you're looking for a new-to-you salt-and-pepper shaker set, candy dish, or funny/Christian coffee mug, you still won't be able to find a brick-and-mortar store with a better selection. The choice of books offered written by ex-celebrities and politicians go far beyond anything put up by your local bookstore, or library. And if you take the time, you can still be surprised by what you can find there, waiting, just for you. A blow dryer. A waffle iron. Bowling shoes. A song.

Snowman by Bob St. Peter

LYRICS

Well the last worker's badge
Is there on the table
The manager's keys
They jingle like sleigh bells
As he turns out the lights
And then drives away slow
And the snow
And the snow
And the snow

There's an old Santa suit
With underarm stains
And a box full of train tracks
That's missing a train
A three-legged reindeer
A one-rail sleigh
That didn't go home again
This Christmas day

There's a Santa Claus beard
Made of pill-bottle cotton
A cabbage patch orphan
That's long been forgotten
While Silent Night plays on a
Clock radio
And the snow
And the snow
And the snow

Well there's racks full of nicknacks
That nobody needs
And shelves of self-help books
That nobody reads
Abdominizers
And crutches galore
All down at the downtown
Thrifty-Thrift store

There's a Santa Claus beard
Made of pill-bottle cotton
A cabbage patch orphan
That's long been forgotten
While Silent Night plays on a
Clock radio
And the snow
And the snow
And the snow

Well the parking lot's empty
The lot lights they shine in
On 3-packs of tinsel
That sparkle like diamonds
While in the front corner
In the magazine manger
A quiet scene unfolds that
Refuses no stranger

There’s a GI Joseph
And a Barbie-doll Mary
A pokemon Jesus
And a store cat named Larry
Who watches out the window
At the traffic going slow
And the snow
And the snow
And the snow
